New Flags at The Ranch

IMG_4769 If you were to ask me a month ago, what I thought of the colorful patterned flags that so adorably hang in front of some homes, I would have told you how stupid, ridiculous and unnecessary they are.

Then, one of my bosses sisters was visiting for Easter, and she brought with her the flag with the black dog on it (shown above). She was very excited about it and promptly hung it over the walk-in gate at our ranch. Me, being the obsessive compulsive that I am, couldn’t stand just ONE flag hanging up on this long rope that draped from one tree to the other. I casually mention this to my boss, and she immediately, without any hesitation whatsoever, said, “Why don’t you get on the internet and see if you can find some more. Like a cat or a duck or a squirrel.” I quickly start to laugh at how her tone changed from Hurry, hurry. Let’s finish these budgets, to They can wait, let’s order more flags. I was finally able to find a few that we liked, so I went ahead and ordered them.

Let me tell you something. I admit it. I can totally see why people love these things. We have dogs at our ranch, so a dog flag seemed fitting. We have cats, so a cat flag made sense. Rabbits, well, ours are white (with blue eyes), but they are still rabbits. We have ducks, so again, why not a duck flag. Plus, how much easier would it be to give someone directions to our ranch by just saying drive until you see the animal flags on the right.

I’ve become obsessed. I have been known to have an extra window or two open so I could search for a cute squirrel flag. Can’t find one I like. *sigh

There are a few members of my family that proudly display their favorite drivers’ NASCAR flags in their front yard during the races on Sunday afternoons, so I suppose other people’s obsession with these flags in their front yards is okay. I’ll stop judging.

I have absolutely nothing to say and I don’t feel like thinking up something. However, I will tell you, if I could have anything to eat right now, it would be a Butterfinger.

Happy Wednesday!

A Trip Down A Bumpy Lane

drive thru wildlife ranch

A little over 10 years ago, while living in what some might call the great state of Texas, The X and I decided we would take the kids to a drive thru wildlife ranch. It was a spur of the moment decision as we were drive south from Austin, and a great decision.

It was not like anything I’d ever seen. We were able to drive through 400 acres of open land that had buffalo, giraffe, rhinos, ostrich, antelope, elk, zebra, llama and more.

As we were driving, a zebra stuck his head inside the drivers window and took the feed bag right out of The X’s lap. It was soooooo funny. We were all laughing so much, that this zebra had the audacity to stick his head inside a car.

(not the actual photo, but similar.)

Towards the end of the drive, an ostrich, came up and stuck it’s head right up to the passenger window and started pecking at it. Hil-ari-ous! We couldn’t stop laughing. He was pecking so hard, I thought the window was going to break. The X assured me it wouldn’t, and we drove on, laughing. As we drove on, he started to chase after us. I felt like I was in the middle of a Hollywood movie.

It was a good time, and I can’t wait to do something similar again. It was definitely worth the scare of the ostrich, and obviously left me with some great memories if I’m telling the story over 10 years later.

Cutesy Clock

Oh. Em. Gee.  I found the cutest clock the other day. I will – one day – be the proud owner of a clock like this. How adorable would this be in Tootsie Roll Pops? I can see it hanging on my future walls.   :-)

Happy Sunday to all!

Breakfast

breakfast plate

I am very much in the mood for this delicious looking plate of French Toast (with LOTS of syrup), eggs (prefer them over medium) and some beautiful looking bacon. A small glass of Orange Juice, a small glass of Milk and a large glass of Iced Tea is what would make this breakfast complete.

I think a trip to one of my favorite breakfast places in overdue.

Mmm.   Bon appétit!

UPDATE: It took forever two days, but I finally got my French Toast (with LOTS of syrup), eggs (over medium) and two strips of bacon. Due to a headache from lack of caffeine, I decided to have iced tea, instead of juice or milk. Thank you JK.

New Audiobook

eat pray love

Ever since getting the iTouch, I’ve become addicted to iTunes. I don’t purchase anything (occasionally catch some free stuff I’m interested in), but I couldn’t help this one. I’ve heard people over time, talk about how great this book was. So, I sought the advice of someone I knew has read it, and a few short minutes later, I had it downloaded. I haven’t listened to it yet, but I will be as I’m falling asleep tonight.

I’ll post a review after I’ve listened to it.

a child called it    the lost boy    a man named dave

Another book that has been recommended to me is A Child Called It. I own a hardcopy of it, but it’s difficult for me to sit down and read. I’d rather listen to someone else tell me the story, instead of me trying to imagine what is taking place. The sequels to it look as amazing as the first, so I’ll definitely be reading/listening to these. An incredible story about an incredible kid/boy/man.

G’Night Moon.

moon following me

I can remember when I was little, looking up at the moon and wondering why it was following me. Why did it want to go where I was going? I remember thinking to myself, lots of other people are doing much more exciting things. go follow them. shoo! go away!

Today, I still look up at the moon, but I’m not shooing it away anymore. I’m in love with the moon. I love every part of the way it lights up the sky. There are often times I can see the moon (or my room is lit up from it’s bright glow) when falling asleep, that I wish the Man in the Moon a good night.

Good night to my readers, and good night to the Man in the Moon. :-)

Having a Baby.

Doni 5 months

One of my bff’s is having a baby. Yay. It’s her first, and it’s a girl. Just like she wanted. Yay again.

Five months into their pregnancy, and they’ve got their little LadyBug’s name still swirling inside their minds. Wonder what it will be. Inquiring minds want to know.

Once the little LadyBug has arrived, there will be an unlimited number of babysitters, no doubt. Of course, she knows I’ll watch the little sweetheart any time. And I’ll call her LadyBug.

Clock Towers

Some people have obsessions about shoes and are constantly looking for the next biggest sale in hopes of snatching up the newest and cutest pair. Some people have obsessions with food and are never completely satisfied when they walk away from a table after a meal. Some have obsessions with plastic surgery and some have obsessions with cars. I…have obsessions with clocks.

While surfing the net the other day, I found some really cool pictures of clock towers. I’m not the kind of person that’s interested in traveling overseas, so getting to see some of these fantastic pieces of art in person isn’t likely. I’m happy settling for the photos. Enjoy.   :-)

Alot of Love

I was reading this blog the other day about how people always misspell the word “A lot”. For a good laugh, read here ---> funny post.

Over the weekend, JK was doing things to his Audi and ran across a piece of wood that had spray paint that looked like the “alot” in the post mentioned above. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to get the picture to transfer from my phone to my computer. If I can figure it out, I’ll update this post with the picture. It’s an ALOT of wood.

Pictured below, is a picture JK drew for me. It’s an ALOT of love. :-)  I sure love him. He makes me laugh even when I think I can’t laugh any more.

Blogging 101

Capture

When I first discovered blogging, I thought it was... People letting other people into their lives. Telling the world things that can say so much about you. I wondered how people did it. I continued to stalk browse the blogs that some of my friends had, and before long, I had my own. (my very first blog) --->Food for Thought<---  I made it private so that I could control who was able to read the rants and raves I sometimes posted. When I built my first blog, I had 3 blogs that I followed regularly. I peeked at other blogs, but nothing that made me want to say Oh my gosh, I have to follow this one. That was one year ago this month.

i love blogging

Over the past year, my blog following list has grown from 3 to 157. A few of the ones I have been following don’t get updated anymore or are completely non functional. I’ll need to eventually sit down and go through them all, deleting the inactive and forgotten and saying goodbye to those I’m not finding I need to follow any longer.

This entire year has brought on new ideas and new ideas have brought on new blogs. I now currently have five.

Enough from me tonight. It’s time to move on to another blog.

g’night   -Valerie

I stumbled across this photo as I was looking for a picture to describe something for another post. As soon as I saw the photo, I said I want to be sitting there, in her place, alone. Then almost immediately after finishing that thought, I said out loud actually, I’d like to push her in. ha.

Is that wrong of me?

a FACE, a VOICE or a GHOST?

I had this friend in high school, who liked me for who I was. He didn’t judge me. He didn’t avoid me when I was in a bad mood. He liked my attitude and often felt the same way I did about things. More times than not, actually. There was never anything physical between us. We simply were not in the relationship for anything other than ‘friends’. And we were great ones.

We laughed at people together. We talked shit about people together. We did things typical high school kids do (and that’s all I’m going to say about that). We passed notes between classes. We were never taking the same classes because he was 2 years behind me, but he was better at math than I was, so it worked out in my favor once when I needed my homework finished but didn’t know how to do it (cause I had been ditching that class all week).

During my senior year, there were many things to attend. Your last winter formal, your last homecoming game/dance, your last prom, graduation, etc. Those are things you want to experience with friends who are important in your life.

Winter formal, I did not attend. I’ve never been real interested in getting dressed up, especially in high school where all the girls (and guys) judged you by your attire. Homecoming, I attended the game, but not the dance. Again, not into dances. Prom, didn’t go. The word prom has so many hidden meanings and expectations in it’s 4 tiny little letters, that it can be overwhelming to some. As someone who was not into dressing up or going to dances, I found it hard to grasp my mind around the fact that we had THREE or FOUR “last” dances in high school. I certainly wasn’t dating someone at the time of prom that would make me want to live life that evening the way prom was meant to be lived, so it didn’t matter. To me, it was just another dance. Just another night to get dressed up. Graduation/Grad Night, I attended proudly, with a date. But not just any date. He was one of my bff’s. He was the one person who had stood by all my crap. The one who had listened to my every yelling session, or rant about a stupid teacher or the dumb jokes I’d make up about a relative of his (said person introduced us originally). I figured after all I had put him through, he was the one and only person I wanted to spend my graduation night with. That was 1996.

We lost touch after that evening. No more school to keep us in close contact. The days went by and our lives moved on, without each other. I moved out of state, and started a life I didn’t know I wanted. After four long years, I moved back and accidentally ran into him at the bank I was now going to be frequenting. Cool! I missed my bff. Our lives were so different by now, we never connected the same way. I saw him a handful of times when I would go inside the bank, but one day, I stopped going to that bank. That was 2001.

About a week and half ago, I made a comment to JK that I wanted bbq, and asked if we could go to Rattler’s for dinner. Him being the kind of guy he is, he didn’t object and we went. While sitting at our table, a guy walks up to our table and calls my name. I looked over at him, stared at him like I was looking at someone who’s arms and legs got switched around, and said, “Yes?”. He told me his name and acted like I was supposed to remember him, but I clearly didn’t. Once the “film” in my head had reached back to ‘95 & ‘96, I jumped out of the booth and gave him a hug. He seemed happy to see me, but after a 9 year absence, I wasn’t able to read him. I asked how he was and he told me where he was living. I was a bit saddened to hear he wasn’t nearby anymore, but Hollywood isn’t that far, right? I didn’t have my phone, so he took my number. That was 8 days ago.

He was someone I thought about often. I miss his friendship. I miss his witty and/or sarcastic remarks. I miss the hard time he used to give me for listening to country music. I miss the drawings he used to give me between classes, of hot girls with big boobs wearing short shorts and “shit kickers” and the big diamond ring he heard  mentioned in a song once. I would get drawings of the Kansas City Chiefs because I was a fan. We had a mutual friend that we used to make fun of and we had drawings of Congo. (Don’t bother. You’ll never figure it out.)

I hope he calls. I’m waiting patiently. I want to sit around and drink beer and tell stories and hear about how his life has been. I want to tell him about my experiences and some of the things I’ve seen he would have enjoyed and/or made fun of me for. He has changed his image a bit, so I’m wondering if he’s still working at a bank. I have so many questions, but no way to answer them.

JK keeps telling me he will call, but I’m not so certain. He would have called by now. He probably typed the number into his phone wrong, and has no other way to get in touch with me (other than frequenting Rattler’s as often as I do). We were too close for him to be waiting this long to call me.

Where is he?

It’ll Be Here Next Week…

…is all I kept hearing.mm flag 2010 I owned this flag for 2 ½ months. I never had it in my physical possession, but I owned it. Paid for it. Walked away with a receipt and the assurance that it would be mailed to me as soon as they arrived. (NASCAR season hadn’t quite started yet, so when she told me they hadn’t come in yet, we weren’t too terribly shocked.

At the same time I ordered this, I bought 3 other flag, all of which arrived, one-at-a-time. *sigh

An entire month goes by, so I decide to respond to one of the spam email newsletters this place puts out. I made mention of a few things she was sure to remember so I was certain she knew who I was as she read my email. I politely mentioned that I hadn’t received the MM flag (pictured above), although I had received the others, thankyouverymuch.   No response.

About another three or four weeks later, I sent another email, again, in response to her mass mailing newsletter. This time I figured I wasn’t going to try to make friends anymore, so my email was short and to the point.   No response.

Two more weeks go by, and I finally said to JK, “At this point, I just want my money back so I can go somewhere else to get it. The season is ½ over.” He said, “Okay. I’ll call her and see what she says.”

**side note: thank you JK for calling. knowing how upset i was about it, i would have said something to the woman i shouldn’t have. don’t want to do something i’m going to regret, so thank you. thank you.

Moving on…  JK finally calls and she tells him the driver won’t authorize the release of the design on the flag (*cough – bullshit – cough*), but he accepts it and hangs up.

Today, I’d had enough. I told him I had now become beyond upset and just wanted my full refund. No further questions from me, your honor, and no more lame ass excuses or lies from her please. He called, got her to refund it and hung up. Thank you, again JK. (insert X’s and O’s here for you).

So it doesn’t seem I’ll be getting my 2010 NASCAR flag this year, but that’s okay. Some other things are just more important. :-)

Happy Friday

happy-weekend-2(combine)

…from my house to yours!

Playing Catch-Up

I am notorious for procrastinating on things I do not want to do, as are most people I imagine, but I’m getting worse. Case in point:

  • I need to have my hair done. I typically get haircuts once or twice a year (if I’m lucky). I had my hair cut last at Christmas, but my bangs are getting to be too much of a nuisance with their out-of-control wispiness.
  • Oil.Change. My awesome little 4-banger needs an oil change. It’s long overdue. I don’t know why I haven’t done it, other than just pure laziness, but it’s about time I take care of it. Perhaps this weekend? If I don’t, I’m afraid my dear Marti will break down on me.  (Yes, my car’s name is Marti. It’s a she.)
  • I need to make an appointment for my yearly exam.
  • Need to go see my pearly white’s doc. (aka dentist) and need to send renewal payment for another year of coverage.
  • Need to go farm some of my crops on FarmVille. (Yes, I’m a FarmVille addict.) Deal with it.

Enough.

Obsession: Pink

I’ve never been the kind of girl to like pink. It’s never been my favorite color. However, there are certain things I find just *better* in pink. Case in point:

100_4284

When I saw this pink lighter, I just knew I had to get it. Smoking or not, I wanted it. And I got it.

pink pen

This pink pen is one of my favorites. There are a few different brands, so try each one out and see which one you like. There is enough of a difference in each one to cause me to pick one over the other, but you choose what’s best for you. I use this every day at work. When someone tries to walk off with it, I have been known to chase them down to get it back. (*blue ink only please*)
